Hospitality mystery shopping in Qatar & the GCC
A hotel's brand standard is a hundred-page document and its guest experience is thirty interactions, most of which nobody measures. The guest satisfaction survey reaches the guests who were content enough to answer it.
The criteria for this sector.
Hospitality evaluation is a stay, not a visit. A full overnight evaluation runs from the reservation call through check-out and covers every department a guest touches, which makes it the longest and most detailed scorecard we operate.
Weighting is agreed with you section by section during scoping. It states what you consider important and it has to be defensible to the location that scores badly because of it.
What we keep finding in hospitality.
The reservation is scored before the shopper arrives. Time to answer, whether the caller's name was used, whether the rate was quoted with taxes and the municipality fee, whether an upsell was attempted, and whether the confirmation arrived when promised. Qatari hotels lose a measurable number of bookings at this stage and almost none of them measure it.
Recovery is the criterion that most distinguishes a luxury property from a well-run mid-market one. Every stay includes one scripted request that cannot be met exactly as asked — an early check-in, a specific room position, a dietary requirement outside the menu. What is scored is not whether it was granted but what happened when it could not be: whether an alternative was offered, whether it was followed through, and whether anyone came back to close the loop.
Housekeeping is scored against an itemised standard on a defined circuit of the room, in a fixed order, so that two shoppers in two properties produce comparable records. Impressionistic scoring of a room is worthless.
Qatar's post-2022 hotel supply means differentiation now sits almost entirely in service delivery rather than in the building. A property whose scores sit at the network average is competing on price, and that is a decision most owners have not consciously made.
An overnight evaluation is expensive relative to a retail visit and should be commissioned accordingly. Most properties get more from four full stays across the year at deliberately varied occupancy than from twelve partial visits, because the failure modes a hotel needs to see appear when the property is full rather than when it is quiet.
Corporate and leisure guests should be shopped as separate profiles. A business traveller arriving at 23:00 for one night, and a family arriving at 15:00 for four, encounter different parts of the operation and forgive different failures. Running one profile and reporting it as the property's guest experience produces a score that the revenue team cannot map to any segment they sell to. Where a property belongs to an international brand, the group's own audit already covers the brand standard. What it does not cover is how the property performs against the three Doha hotels a guest was actually choosing between, and that comparison is the one an owner acts on.
What a shopper actually does on a visit.
The full overnight stay
Reservation through check-out, covering every department. This is the standard hospitality instrument and produces the most complete record of a property's delivery.
The scripted recovery
One request per stay that cannot be met exactly — an early arrival, a room position, a dietary requirement. Scored on the response, not on the outcome.
The outlet-only visit
A restaurant, bar or spa evaluated without a stay, on the restaurant scorecard. Used where the property's food and beverage operation is the commercial priority.
The scorecard structure.
A full stay instrument runs to roughly ninety criteria across the departments below. Outlet-only visits use the restaurant instrument instead.
What clients act on first.
Properties that score well on the scripted recovery scenario are almost always the same properties that retain their repeat corporate business. The two move together closely enough that recovery is worth treating as a leading indicator rather than as a service nicety.
A named case study with a baseline, a date and a result belongs here. We have not substituted a percentage for one. Every figure of that kind on the previous site was unsourced, and several contradicted each other.
