Mystery Shopping

Trained anonymous shoppers visit your locations as ordinary customers and score what happened against criteria you helped write.

01 / What it is

A mystery shop is a controlled observation. The shopper arrives on a defined date, follows a defined scenario, and records what they saw against criteria agreed with you before fieldwork begins. What you get back is evidence, not opinion.

The value of a mystery shopping programme sits almost entirely in its design. A scorecard written without you measures the wrong things; a scorecard written with you measures the behaviours your training actually asks for. We start there, and the fieldwork follows.

Every visit produces a timestamped record: what the shopper observed, against which criterion, with a score and a written narrative. Photographs, receipts and audio go with it where the scenario and the law allow. A programme run at a useful frequency turns those records into a trend you can act on rather than an anecdote you can argue about.

Shoppers are recruited to match your actual customer profile, briefed on the scenario, and never told what score you are hoping for. Every submitted report passes a review before it reaches you.

02 What we measure

The criteria, before we start.

Written against your own service standard, weighted with you, and agreed in writing before any fieldwork is commissioned.

Approach and greeting time
Staff product and service knowledge
Needs identification before recommendation
Adherence to the service standard you train to
Cross-sell and upsell attempt, where it is part of the standard
Queue and wait time against your own target
Cleanliness and presentation of the environment
Transaction accuracy and speed at payment
Complaint and objection handling
Close, farewell and follow-up commitment
03 How we run it

Stages, with the time each one actually takes.

01

Scope

1–2 weeks

We agree locations, markets, visit frequency, shopper profile and what the programme is meant to answer.

02

Design the scorecard

1–2 weeks

Criteria are written against your service standard, weighted, and tested on a pilot visit before the full wave runs.

03

Recruit and brief

1 week

Shoppers matching the customer profile are selected from the panel, briefed on the scenario, and quota-checked by market.

04

Fieldwork

2–6 weeks

Visits run to a schedule. Completion is monitored daily and shortfalls are re-issued while the wave is still open.

05

QA and report

1–2 weeks

Every report is reviewed against the evidence before publication. You receive the data, the narratives and the recommendations together.

04 / Deliverables

What you receive.

  • A scored evaluation per visit, with the shopper's written narrative
  • Photographic and receipt evidence where the scenario permits it
  • Location league table and criteria failure ranking
  • Trend against previous waves once a second wave has run
  • A recommendations note naming the specific behaviour to change
Illustrative report structure — the instrument, not a client's data. Real scorecards are confidential to the client who commissioned them.
06 / Questions

Questions we are actually asked.

For a single location, three visits in a wave is the practical floor — one visit measures one shift on one day. Across a network, the useful unit is visits per location per wave, and most programmes settle between two and four depending on how much the experience varies by daypart.

They should know a programme exists; they should not know which visit is which. Announcing the programme is what makes it a development tool rather than a trap, and it is what most HR and legal teams in Qatar expect. The individual visit stays anonymous.

Where the scenario needs it and the location's rules and Qatari law permit it. We agree what evidence is collectible during scoping, and the scorecard only asks for evidence the shopper can legitimately obtain.

Yes. A mystery shopper is a customer making a genuine transaction, observing a service that is delivered in public. What requires care is the evidence: recording, photography and the handling of any personal data about staff. Those constraints are settled during scoping, not improvised in the field.

Four to six weeks from a signed brief to the first completed visits in Qatar, longer where a market needs a specific shopper profile recruited from scratch. Scorecard design is the part that should not be rushed.

It goes back through review against the evidence. If the narrative and the score disagree, the report is corrected or withdrawn. A programme that cannot survive a challenge is not worth running.

07 / Enquire

Three fields.

Tell us roughly what you need and a person will reply. No form-fill sequence, no drip campaign.

Or build a full brief — it takes about two minutes and gets you a more useful answer.
